Give me a home among the gum trees…

For nine years, I was the Domain feature property writer for Fairfax weekly newspapers. In addition to writing articles on properties for newspapers, I write advertising copy for properties listed through Barry Plant.

In the past, I have written copy for various agencies, including Morrison Kleeman, Mason White McDougall and Buckingham and Co.

19 BOYCE AVENUE, BRIAR HILL
A French Affair

Evoking scenes of the French countryside and sophisticated Parisian apartments, this elegant residence in the heart of Briar Hill is inspired by French Provincial elements.
Professionally styled by Rodney Wyatt at Chapter Seven Design and featuring Robert Boyle-designed landscaped gardens, the light-filled and airy home exudes the charm and romance of a French escape, yet is still functional for family-friendly living.
The fully renovated and elevated house is set on about 875 square metres and features a sandstone-paved, vine-covered portico overlooking olive trees, which is the perfect spot for a private breakfast in the morning sunshine or a drink on a balmy evening.
The vendors attribute part of the home’s beauty to its seasonal aspect – the trees lining the driveway are ablaze with burnt red leaves in autumn and the vines and lavender blossom with vivid colour in spring.
Double doors open to the separate dining room that leads through to the drawing room, which could also be used as a home theatre or even a bedroom.
The bright, open-plan meals-family area features built-in cabinetry, lime oak floors and a gas-log fireplace as the centrepiece. Four sets of double doors open out to the sandstone paved alfresco area and a pergola laced by vines, providing the ideal setting for effortless indoor-outdoor entertainment. The lily pond with water feature is the flat backyard’s focal point.
The modern French Provincial kitchen has a Caesarstone breakfast bar, stainless steel appliances, timber benchtops, butler’s pantry and dishwasher.
The parents’ wing is zoned for privacy – with a large main bedroom, en suite with twin vanities, two built-in wardrobes and dressing room. The main bedroom has double doors that open out to a private, red brick-paved courtyard lined by hedges with views to the charming potting shed, vegetable and herb gardens.
The children’s bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and share a family bathroom.
One of the bedrooms has access to a second paved courtyard.
Further features include a neutral colour scheme, cellar/workshop, off-street parking (including room for a boat or caravan), automatic security gates, studio/hobby room, carport, laundry, third toilet, gas heating and evaporative cooling.

FAIRFAX DOMAIN LEAD PROPERTY

6 DE FELICE COURT, FOREST HILL
Leading off Springvale Road, there are many courts and avenues that are seldom seen from the busy arterial road. They are tucked away from the stream of traffic but they provide a surprisingly quiet, convenient and at times, picturesque spot. De Felice Court is one of those locations that is tranquil but still reaps the rewards of its handy position.
This delightful Cape Cod-style residence is located at the bowl of this cul-de-sac, and exudes all the charm and character associated with its design.
Originating from New England, this style was created by English colonists who settled in America in the late 17th century. Since then the design has undergone some changes, but this one still has the fundamentals of its predecessors: steep roof with side gables, hardwood floors and little exterior ornamentation.
This brick residence is far from being ordinary. It has a lovely exterior with a small pond and rock garden surrounded by English box in the front yard, as well as a lush lawn and shady trees. Inside, there are gleaming polished timber floors, and in the living room, there are casement windows overlooking the front garden. There is also an open fireplace, and peach-coloured walls.
The vendors say they love the bright and airy feel inside, thanks to its north-facing aspect, which also keeps it relatively cool during the warmer months. The gourmet kitchen has timber cabinetry and benchtops, as well as Emilia stainless steel stove and a cleverly disguised dishwasher.
An extended meals area has a French door that opens out to the back garden with paved alfresco area and a raised herb garden bed, perfect for grabbing the perfect ingredients to add some flavour to a dish. There are also two bedrooms here. Currently, one is used as a nursery, and the other is used as a large study. The study has pale green walls and views to the front yard through the casement windows; the other overlooks the back garden. Both have built-in wardrobes and easy access to the family bathroom. The stylish new bathroom has a claw foot bath, frameless glass shower, leadlight casement windows that have lush garden vistas, a toilet separated by a tiled wall and glossy imported floor tiles.
Upstairs are two more bedrooms, with the main having pale blue walls, a built-in wardrobe, and as this room connects to the roof storage, there is the potential to renovate and add an ensuite.
The second bedroom has sky-blue walls and views over the treetops, as well as a built-in wardrobe.
Outdoors, the backyard has a lawn area, that’s great for kids to play in safely, as the area is securely fenced.
There are two palm trees, a lawn area, tree fern, loquat tree and a path to the two vegetable patches at the side of the house.
A garage, double carport, ducted heating, reverse-cycle cooling and generous roof storage complete this property, which is close to Forest Hill Chase, Nunawading Aquatic Centre, Forest Hill Reserve, schools and transport.
